MEPZ SEZ Strengthens Community Engagement through Education and Sports Initiatives

August 14, 2026

MEPZ Special Economic Zone (MEPZ SEZ), in partnership with MEPZMA and CMCT, has undertaken a series of community-focused initiatives aimed at supporting education, healthcare, skill development, environment and community well-being in areas surrounding the Zone.

As part of its efforts to build a structured and sustained approach to community engagement, MEPZ conducted a survey in neighbouring areas to identify local needs and priority areas for intervention. The findings identified three key areas for youth upliftment: Skill Development and Employability Enhancement, Education Continuity and Career Guidance, and Sports, Culture and Community Engagement, thereby providing a framework for targeted interventions in partnership with CSR stakeholders and industry.

As part of these efforts, renovated infrastructure and digital learning facilities were inaugurated at the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare Middle School, Ramatilagam Nagar, Tambaram, which is celebrating its centenary.

The programme was presided over by Tmt. Vasanthakumari Kamalakannan, Mayor, Tambaram, and Thiru G. Kamaraj, Deputy Mayor, Tambaram. The occasion held special significance as Tmt. Vasanthakumari Kamalakannan is an alumna of the school. Her participation during the school’s centenary celebrations underscored the institution’s longstanding contribution to the local community.

The newly inaugurated facilities are intended to strengthen the learning environment and improve access to digital learning resources for students. Speaking on the occasion, Thiru. Alex Paul Menon, IAS, Development Commissioner, MEPZ, emphasised the importance of sustained engagement with neighbouring communities, particularly in education and vocational training.

“The true impact of such initiatives will be seen in the opportunities they create for the next generation. Our sustained focus on education and vocational training is aimed at ensuring that children from neighbouring communities are equipped to aspire, achieve and eventually take up leadership and senior positions across different walks of life, both in the public and private sectors,” he said.

The occasion also marked the launch of the MEPZ–MEPZMA–CMCT Kabaddi Tournament, bringing together around 20 teams from neighbouring communities. The tournament seeks to provide a constructive platform for young people to channelise their energy through sport, while fostering discipline, teamwork, physical fitness and a spirit of healthy competition. Such initiatives also help identify and nurture local talent and encourage young people to direct their abilities towards productive and positive pursuits.

These initiatives form part of MEPZ SEZ’s continuing efforts to ensure that economic and industrial growth within the Zone contributes to wider social development in neighbouring communities. With the support of industry stakeholders and CSR partners, MEPZ SEZ will continue to build on the findings of the community survey and develop interventions across skill development and employability, education and career guidance, and sports and community engagement, while also addressing broader needs in healthcare, environment and community well-being. Through sustained, needs-based interventions, MEPZ SEZ seeks to create meaningful opportunities beyond the Zone and contribute to the long-term social and economic advancement of the communities around it.
