The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) at Tambaram, India's third SEZ established in 1984, is set for vertical redevelopment to bring in more companies, boost exports to ₹30,000 crore, create 1 lakh jobs, and increase the value of annual exports. The redevelopment plan involves the construction of multi-storey flatted factories to maximize land use and accommodate more units. The initial phase will include a 2 lakh sqm building, with further expansion depending on market demand. The estimated cost of redevelopment is between ₹2,000 crore to ₹2,500 crore. Now, the facility spread over 262 acres is set for vertical redevelopment of 10 lakh sq m (more than 1 crore sq ft) that will bring in more companies and boost value of its exports to ₹30,000 crore and create another 1 lakh jobs, Alex Paul Menon, development commissioner, MEPZ SEZ, tells TOI in an interview.
