Redevelopment to Boost MEPZ Exports to ₹30,000 C

The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) at Tambaram, India's third SEZ established in 1984, is set for vertical redevelopment to bring in more companies, boost exports to ₹30,000 crore, create 1 lakh jobs, and increase the value of annual exports. The redevelopment plan involves the construction of multi-storey flatted factories to maximize land use and accommodate more units. The initial phase will include a 2 lakh sqm building, with further expansion depending on market demand. The estimated cost of redevelopment is between ₹2,000 crore to ₹2,500 crore. The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) at Tambaram was the third SEZ to be established in India, in 1984. Now, the facility spread over 262 acres is set for vertical redevelopment of 10 lakh sq m (more than 1 crore sq ft) that will bring in more companies and boost value of its exports to ₹30,000 crore and create another 1 lakh jobs, Alex Paul Menon, development commissioner, MEPZ SEZ, tells TOI in an interview.
